Re: Mercury Black Max 150 XR2 Running Rough! My best guess is the high speed charge coil in the stator. It looks like it's getting fuel, but not firing above a certain RPM. A stuck float needle won't let it idle. A leaking float needle won't let it idle. A leaking float needle won't be noticed at high speed. They basically stand open at WOT anyway.

It depends on a lot of stuff like hull, weight, what the bottom of the boat is configured like, prop type etc. Ive got a 25 pitch laser 2 and for my hull its a hunk of crap. Slips 18% and doesnt handle corners worth a damn unless I drop it 5 inches under the pad. turned off [Mercury 150-HP Black Max], brought in all my gear, started [Mercury 150-HP Black Max], and gave it some throttle. I stopped the engine, let it sit, started it again, started trolling again, [and in] just a couple of minutes the alarm started again. I took the boat this weekend and [Mercury 150-HP Black Max] ran fine for half an hour.What you should have on the rectifier is 5 wires. 2 yellows, 2 reds, and a gray. (it is possible that you have 1 extra black wire, and if you do, it's a ground). The 2 yellows should go to the stator, the 2 reds tie together and go to the starter solenoid where the battery cable connects. the serial number is a little bit tricky A114442 you cannot find it in the ranges, but my vendors program put an zero infront of the number when inserted to the program. And that gave the 398-5454A7 stator as the original assembly. It is an 2.0 liter 150 black max, 1986. The engine has no Voltage regulator, only rectifier.

Hi guys, Over the weekend, I purchased a 1986 Mercury XR2 150. I have read up on the motor but, I want more specific details on the motor. For example, what rpms does it runs, the timing ignition, exhaust housing, carbs, etc. Everything that sets is apart from the 150 Black Max I replaced it with. Thanks:thumbsup: 284834

The motor is a 1989 100 hp Mercury. The tan wire goes to a terminal block under the same screw as the leads from the temp sensor and a tan and blue wire that is supposedly for a temp idiot light (according to the wiring harness directions). Will crank, time you hit the starter. Re: 1989 150 mecury black max XR2. My 88 XR4 is a 2.4 wid a clamshell cowl. I think the difference between them is XR2 is 2.0l, XR4 is 2.4l. XR6 is 2.5l. They are all strong 150's. XR2 and XR4 came with 4 1/4 in lowers. XR6 came with either 4 1/4 or 4 3/4 in lower. Re: 1986 Merc 150 Black Max hard starting and overloading fuel.
